Listen to Obituary

Mable was born on December 14 1940 and departed this life peacefully on Tuesday morning January 27 , 2026 at Jackson Purchase Medical Center. Mable lived her life by keeping God first and her family close. She got her nickname from her Dad because she was born with a thick head of curly hair. AND THAT’S HOW “FUZZY” CAME TO BE! th th She accepted Christ at a young age and was a member of Second Christian Church. Throughout her years she held down several jobs; working two full time positions - the Mayfield School Systems and Kennedy Tobacco Barn. At the school system she was manager of all the cafeterias in the Mayfield Schools. Her school supervisor, Mrs. Linda Harrell, was her inspiration for a giving spirit, and taught her well. Mable was the first African American woman to own a clothing store in downtown Mayfield, where she won Business of the Week and Business of the Month. Mable’s joy was cooking, and she could cook and bake anything without recipes. She made sure that she fed whomever came to her house, especially children. No one left hungry. She didn’t just feed with food, she also gave a piece of her mind with love, wisdom, and knowledge and did not bite her tongue for anyone. Mable Brooks took joy in becoming a Grandmother. Her first biological grandchild, Anthony Moss (was the namesake of her son) gave her the name “Granny” which remains to this day. She took pride in being a Foster Parent for many years and fostered many who have gone on to be successful in their own right. For this she was presented Kentucky Colonel from the Governor f KY.

From this life she leaves to cherish her memories and legacy, six sons;Howard Moss (Janice) Mayfield, Dennis Moss (Celeste) Atlanta, Marcus Moss Mayfield, Michael Moss Texas, Shannon Brooks (Jodie) SanAntonio, Steven Brooks Mayfield.

Siblings Lewis Moss, Charles Moss, Robert Dumas, Louise Moss, Racine Owens, and Shirley Edwards, and a special daughter Marcia Coneal.

We also lovingly remember, unbeknownst to many, my mother’s other brother, L.V. Love, whose bond with Mama and her sisters was marked by devotion, protection, and enduring love. L.V. loved aggravating his nephews about his sister, Mable. His presence and care will always be part of our family’s story.

Mama couldn’t wait to be reunited with her daughter, “Gina,” and Anthony, her son. She had the most loving bond with Gina who lived next door to her, who also was one of her caregivers.

Additionally, to cherish her memories are a special daughter, Stacey Burdine and a nephew, Troy Moss, who resides in Chicago, IL. Each time Troy came home to visit, he’d always bring her great gifts and food.

Mama did so much in the the city of Mayfield; one being the President of the Ladies Auxiliary, “Unit 136” of Graves County at the young age of eighteen. She also helped host Christmas parties for many children. Throughout the years, she had the pleasure of cooking for countless people in Mayfield including: State Representatives, Pharmacists, Doctors, Lawyers, Realtors, and many others who had the honor of coming to her table(s). She also helped so many people with their issues; if she couldn’t help, she would guide them to the right people. Mama had the privilege of uniting with churches, one being Smith Temple Presbyterian where she gave her life to Christ at an early age and the other was New Mission Ministries, where she worked diligently in helping to establish under the pastorship of Gregg Hussey.

The family of Mable “Fuzzy” (Moss) Brooks would like to express our sincere thanks to everyone for the texts, calls, cards, food, visits, and especially the love and prayers at this difficult time that we’re going through. Thank you Mason Brothers Funeral Home and the Mayfield Printing Company.
