Jewell "J.D." Dennis Boyd went to be with the Lord on March 29, 2020 with family by his side.
He was born on June 9, 1947 to the late Leo and Carrie Boyd.
He attended Lincoln Elementary and Central High school where he lettered in football and track and was the first African American in the All-City Band and Orchestra. In his early years, he was a well-known drummer who played for local and famous bands and continued to play in church.
J.D. was also a called evangelist and pastored at Word of Life Church in Evansville and Owensboro.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corp and retired from Operating Engineers Local 181, where he served on the Advisory Board.
He will be remembered for his boisterous laugh, love of God, family, and friends, meeting new people, , lengthy conversations, grill master techniques, and playing the drums like no other.
J.D. was preceded in death his by parents, stepmother Beatrice Grissett, and brothers Paul, Phillip, and Frank Boyd.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sandra, and their children, Keir and Kami Boyd of Evansville. His sons, Dennis (Tara) Williams and Jamarr Rowland of Ohio. 8 grandchildren, Jordan Nelson, Keiron Hardin, Jewell Latrice Williams, Brayden and Karah Bethe, Kyler Boyd, and Jamarr Jr. and Lamar Rowland. 7 great-grandchildren, brother, Wilton (Ella) Boyd of Evansville, step-siblings Bernice Williams and Elgin Reynolds of Indianapolis, a host of nieces and nephews, and longtime friend, Pastor Stephen Brown.
Graveside funeral services will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery on Friday, April 3, 2020 at 1p.m. Mason Funeral Home is handling arrangements. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
