Harold Phelps Jackson, 86, left his earthly home for his eternal resting place with the Lord on April 26, 2020. He was born to Alonzo Jackson and Mildred McFarland Jackson in Evansville on November 17, 1933. Harold attended schools in the Evansville Vanderburgh School System graduating from Lincoln High School in 1952. Shortly after graduating he became employed at the Evansville State Hospital until he accepted a position at Sears Roebuck Co. For many years, Harold was a member of the Soul Brothers Social Club. He retired from Sears as a Division Manager after 32 years of service. Living out a very active retirement, Harold became a Foster Grandparent for the Community Action Program of Evansville and was an active member and officer in the Golden Age Breakfast Club. Harold was one of the organizers of the Lincoln Clark-Douglass Alumni Association. He was also the first President of the association and remained in that position for several years.
Harold accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Zion Baptist Church. Many years later as an adult, he became a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church where he was baptized a second time. Harold was a faithful member of St. John. His activities included: worker in the Sunday Feeding Program, member of Knights of St. Peter Claver Court 239, past president of the church Finance Committee, Bible Study, former president of the Parish Council, member of the Friends of St. John Fundraiser Committee, member of the Chittlin Fest Committee, and a regular attendee of the National Black Catholic Congress.
He was an avid reader of cookbooks , National Geographic Magazine, and many books about travel. Harold was famously known for his sweet potato, lemon meringue, and chess pies and was an all-around nice guy.
In addition to his parents, Harold is preceded in death by siblings: Margaret Jackson, Cecilia Jackson, Robert Jackson, John Jackson; great grandson: Jalen Cook.
Harold is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Clara Nicholson Jackson; children: Jerry Cook, Dennis (Betty) Jackson, Deborah Taft, Caroline Edwards; foster daughter: Kathy Lindsey; siblings: Lillian Jackson, Ellen (Earl) Williams, Rachel Jackson, Martha Shelby, Marybelle Pulley, Teresa Bailey, Alonzo Jackson, Jr., and Ronnie Jackson; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Graveside services are 11:00 a.m. Monday May 4, 2020 at Oak Hill Cemetery with visitation on Sunday May 3, 2020 from 4-6 p.m. at Mason Brothers Memorial Chapel.
