Arthur Lee Smith, Sr. was born on May 12, 1936, to Johnny and Julia Smith in Columbus, Mississippi. He departed this earthly life on May 14, 2025, at 11:50 p.m. at Hamilton Pointe in Newburgh, Indiana.
He graduated from Central High School in Ruleville, MS. Not soon after graduation, he moved to Evansville, Indiana, where he met the love of his life and wife of 60 years, Angela Vonceil Smith. She preceded him in death on November 13, 2020. From this union, 11 children were born.
He worked 35 years for Alcoa Aluminum Company, Warrick Operations, before retiring in 2000. Before starting his career at Alcoa, he worked at Woods Drugstore and Delta Airlines to provide for his family.
He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. He was an active 65+ year member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. He regularly attended Sunday worship services and Sunday School until a few months ago, when his health prevented him from doing so.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Angela Smith; parents Johnny and Julia Smith; 10 of his 11 siblings; and children: Arthur L. Smith, Jr., Germaine Smith, Ethellita Smith, Tamara Smith, Lawrence Smith, and Tabitha Smith.
He leaves to cherish his memory his (5) Children: Byron Smith of Denver, Colorado, Vicky Kimbrew, Deanna Smith, Jeffery Smith (Jamila), Collette Smith Owsley (Jermaine), Aunt-in-Law Annie Tunley, and Daughter-in-law Agnes Smith all of Evansville, Indiana; Brother and Sister-In-Law: Freddie and Linda Smith of Rialto, California; Sister-In-Law: Mattie Smith of Ruleville, Mississippi; Brother-in-Law Haywood Tunley, Jr. of Yonkers New York; (10) Grandchildren; (13) Great Grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A heartfelt thank you to the nurses, aides, business office (Cathy and Beckie), and staff at Hamilton Pointe Health, AseraCare Hospice, primary physician Dr. Donald Brake & staff at Ascension St Vincent, and Dr. Ashwani Bedi & staff at Ascension St Vincent Cardiology for the care they provided to our father. We also want to extend a special thanks to Pastor Ryan & Lady Ngozi Jackson, and the many members of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church for your prayers, visits, love, & support to our father.
