Alyce Johnson, a beloved pillar of the Henderson community known for her generous spirit and legendary cooking, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of faith and flavor.
Born to the union of Rev. John Henry and Irene Wilburn Dunlap, Alyce’s foundation was built on faith. She joined the Methodist Church at a young age and later became a member of Greater Norris Chapel Baptist Church. A product of the Hopkins County School System, she carried the values of her upbringing throughout her life.
Alyce was the devoted wife of the late Willie Johnson, with whom she shared 51 wonderful years of marriage. Her commitment to her community was further evidenced by her 50-year membership with the Rebecca Chapter #7.
Known throughout Henderson County for her culinary talents, Alyce’s kitchen was the heart of many celebrations. As a professional caterer she prepared meals for events, churches, the Elks Lodge, local restaurants, and private homes. Her food was a gift to all who tasted it. To her family, her cooking was simply the taste of home. She was an avid Goodwill shopper and loved playing cards with her friends. Alyce was one of B.B. King’s greatest fans.
Alyce was preceded in death by her parents and husband; two stepsons, Horace Tillerson and Ondrea Johnson; her sister, Bernice Sellars (James); and her brothers Charles Dunlap, James Dunlap, Wilburn Dunlap, Alton Peter Dunlap. She was also preceded by sisters-in-law, Mable Armstead, Jessie Armstead, and Margaret Johnson; and brothers-in-law, Cellie, Walter, Phil, Charles, Dudley, Joe, and Clinton Johnson.
Her memory will be cherished by her special sister-in-law, Mary Etta Dunlap of Louisville, KY; sister-in-law, Lottie Swope of Evansville, IN; and brother-in-law, Leonard Johnson of Henderson, KY. She also leaves behind foster daughter, Cynthia Robards, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins and sorrowing friends. The family extends a special thank you to her niece, Dorothy Morse, who provided dedicated care for her for many years.
