Sara L. Gray

July 17, 1961 — August 6, 2020

Sara L. Gray, affectionately known as “Sara Baby” was born July 17, 1961 in Evansville, IN to Willie E. Gray and Ann Gray. On Thursday, August 6th, 2020, Sara departed this life reuniting with her oldest daughter, Marika and her mother, Ann.

Sara attended Cedar Hall Elementary and Central High School, graduating in 1980. She was a lifetime member of Greater St. James Baptist Church and was baptized at an early age. At Greater St. James, she was a member of the Gospel Chorus Choir and also the Senior Usher Board. Whenever asked, she was willing to help in any capacity she could, especially with her baked goods. She was an exceptional baker.

Sara was always in charge of the baked goods for the family gatherings. She was the main person at family gatherings to clean and cook the chitterlings. This was a job no one wanted. She will be missed for her Martin Luther King Birthday and Good Friday Fish Fries. Sara was a very loving and affectionate person, not only with her family, but with others. She had a heart of gold.

Sara was employed with Sodexo Marriott at the University of Evansville for many years. At the time of her passing, Sara was employed at Rescare Inc. where she held the position of House Manager for Patient Care Services. Sara had a special bond with her co-workers at Rescare. Sara loved to shop, which was obvious by her appearance. She loved keeping a new hairstyle and a flawless face of make-up. Her favorite item to shop for was handbags, as she always coordinated her handbag with her outfit. Sara called herself the “Black Martha Stewart” because of her exceptional interior decorating skills as she put it. She also loved to travel.

Sara loved her family and was expecting her first grandson later this year. Sara is survived her father, Willie E. Gray (Shirley), her daughter Tasia (Sean); brothers John, Everett (Lorna) and Vincent Gray all of Phoenix, AZ; aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins, and her lifelong friend Carolyn “Cookie” McNary. She will be missed by all who knew her.
