Rev. George Wingo

Rev. George L. “Pete” Wingo, 74, of Evansville, went to be with the Lord to rest from his many years of serving and laboring for the Lord. He was born on October 21, 1943 to Hallie and Mary Hairlson Wingo in Henderson, KY. He graduated from Douglas High School. George was ordained as a minister of the Gospel in 1979 in St. Paul, Minnesota where he lived for several years. While in the St. Paul/Minneapolis area, he pursued his God-given musical gifts in the churches and gospel groups in that area.

George was fiercely independent. He had a larger than life personality and will be remembered for his ability to tell a “great” story.
Being trained in Culinary Arts, he worked for Aramark for many years as a chef at Mead Johnson Company and Bristol Myers Squibb. He also catered many social events.

Rev. Wingo was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church where he used his musical talents to sing in the Voices of Hope and served in many capacities in the church ministry. Very much a part of the local gospel community, Rev. Wingo served in the legendary gospel groups “Voices of Glory”, “Unity”, and “Anointed Revelation”. He performed in several Black History musicals and was a noted soloist.
In addition to his parents, Rev. Wingo was preceded in death by his nephew, Bruce Howard and sister, Mary Gregory. He leaves to cherish his memory, a host of friends and family.

Homegoing Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 12:00 noon at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 663 W. R. Brown Sr. Way. A community choir will be providing music, extending an invitation to anyone that would like to participate. R. Mason Brothers Memorial Chapel is in charge of services.
