Eugene E. Gilbert
November 27, 1929 — June 1, 2016
Eugene E. Gilbert, the son of the late Henry Gilbert and Lydia Darton Gilbert was born on November 27, 1929 in Cairo, KY. He departed this life for eternal life on Wednesday, June 1, 2016.
He attended Cairo Grade School and Douglas High School in Henderson, KY. Eugene confessed a hope in Christ at age 12. He was baptized in Jim Posey’s pond near Walnut Hill Baptist Church in Henderson County. He loved the Lord and his church and served in many capacities: Junior Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Chairman of Trustee Board, and Choir Chaplain. He was a member of Circle #4 for many years. He returned after two years in the United States Army as army chaplain assistant and was employed by Henderson Police Department. He took part in the integration “set-in” in public places. This was a great experience.
Eugene lived a full and wonderful Christian life, giving everything to God from his heart and soul. He would go about his daily work and on the highway singing. He was a hard worker and could do just about any type of work. He was a very good cook and he canned foods from the garden. He gave so much of himself: time, money and love. Family, church and friends will always remember him as never being too busy to lend a helping hand.
He was united in marriage to Syrilla Tramill on August 29, 1953 and to this union six sons were born.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Syrilla Gilbert on October 4, 2001; and his son, Michael Eugene Gilbert in March 1978.
Eugene leaves to cherish his loving memory, six sons: Carlos R. Gilbert, Delbert A. Gilbert, Stacey L. Gilbert , Ellery L. Gibert – all of Henderson KY, Dexter R. Gilbert of Louisville KY, and Bruce Gregory of Evansville IN; caregiver, Adreanna Sutton; and a host of cousins, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Services will be held Monday, June 6, 2016 at 11:00am at First Baptist Church in Henderson KY with visitation Sunday from 6:00pm – 8:00pm also at the church. Burial in Fernwood Cemetery. Mason Brothers Audubon Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be left at www.masonbrothersfs.com .
